Mediating Effects of Social Supports on the Decrease of Depression of the Rural Elderly

Abstract
This study verifies the mediating effects of the social supports on the depression of the rural elderly, of more than 65 years old living in the rural areas of 8 counties of Jollabukdo province have been interviewed and a total of 228 people¡¯s answers are used as the data for the analysis. The effect relations of the stressor and the social supports on the depression are as follows. First, in the relation between the social supports and the depression, the depression is decreased by the combined social support, and by the family support in the case of the structural support, and by the emotional support in the case of the functional support. Second, in the verification of the mediating effect of the social supports, the combined social supports shows the mediating effect that alleviates the effect of the subjective economic status on the depression. Likewise, the family support in the case of the structural support shows the mediating effect that alleviates the effect of the subjective economic status on the depression, and the emotional support in the case of the functional support shows the mediating effect of alleviating the effect of the activities of daily living status on the depression respectively. This shows that the social supports has direct and indirect effects of alleviation of the depression, and thus suggests that the social supports can be a crucial factor in improving the quality of life of the rural elderly.
